How to Make a Layered Bed
When the seasons change, I like to swap out my bedding. It’s an easy way to bring in the colors of the time in a subtle and cozy way. We are commonly asked how to achieve a layered, relaxed and cozy bed vibe so we thought we’d share our tips and tricks. Below are step by step instructions for making a bed to achieve that layered look.
This video shows the step by step process.
Put your fitted sheet on nice and tight. We like these Boll & Branch Signature Sheets.
I don’t personally use a flat sheet, but if you do, add that layer here. Starting by lining it up with the very top of the mattress (or head of the bed). Pull it tight and tuck it all the way around leaving about a foot untucked at the top.
Add your chosen bed blanket using the same process as you did for your flat sheet. This Bedsure Muslin Blanket is my go-to. It’s light but cozy, perfect for layering. Pull it up to the top of the bed, fold it down about 12” and tuck it in on all sides. The trick to this part is to tuck it on one side and then, from the other side, pull it as tight as you can and tuck it. (This part is important!)
Put your stuffed duvet over top, again lining it up to the head of the bed. This Simple & Opulence Linen Duvet Cover Set is our favorite. It is super soft right out of the gate but gets softer and softer with every wash. If you like a crisp, more tailored look, you can iron or steam the fabric. If you have a footboard on your bed, tuck the duvet in only there, not on the sides. Smooth and fluff out any wrinkles.
Take the top of the duvet and fold it in half down to the foot of the bed. Then take that same piece and fold it backwards in half again creating a trifold.
Add your foot of the bed blanket. This can be done however you prefer, but we trifold it to the size of whats left below the duvet trifold. We used this Blue Indigo Print Cotton Handmade Handblock Quilt here. The foot blanket can change with the seasons or your mood. It’s an easy way to freshen up your space.
Add your pillows! First your sleeping pillows then your decorative ones.
For the decorative Euro pillows. We like to use 26” x 26” pillows. Here are links to the VHC Striped Shams we’ve used here. We always size up 2” on the inserts, so the inserts used here are 28” x 28”. These Pillowflex Inserts are our go-to. They are really plush so they stand on their own, but they’re also comfortable to sit up against.
The second layer of decorative pillows should be 20” x 20”. We’ve used the Foindtower Linen in Rust. Again, size up to a 22” x 22” Pillowflex insert.
The last pillow layer is a single decorative piece. I used one I had on hand, but this Canyon Theory Hand Block Print Pure Linen 20x20 brings in another Handblock pattern which I love.
That’s it! Sleep well.
