MK: Steak + Bar, Bringing a City-Level Restaurant Experience to Glen Ellyn
We love projects that allow us to think beyond interiors and design a complete experience. MK: Steak + Bar in Glen Ellyn was exactly that kind of opportunity.
From the beginning, the goal was clear: create a restaurant that feels elevated but completely approachable. A place where the design is confident and memorable, but never takes itself too seriously. Somewhere guests can gather over great food, order another round, and settle into the kind of night that unfolds naturally.
Designing the Atmosphere
When we began shaping the space, we leaned into bold color, layered textures, and confident patterns to give the restaurant a strong and unmistakable identity. Hospitality spaces should have personality, and we wanted MK: Steak + Bar to feel vibrant the moment you walk through the door.
Warm woods help ground the space and bring a sense of familiarity, while modern stone and tile add contrast and structure. Throughout the restaurant, we incorporated custom furnishings designed specifically for the space to create comfortable seating moments that support both intimate dinners and lively group gatherings.
Every material and detail was chosen to create a sense of warmth and energy. The goal was simple: design an environment that supports what matters most in a restaurant. Great food, unforgettable gatherings, and seriously good vibes.
A Full Experience, Not Just a Space
While the interiors are the most visible part of the project, our work on MK: Steak + Bar went far beyond the physical design of the restaurant.
At Heffinger Interiors, we focus on experience-led environments, and this project allowed us to lead the concept from start to finish. Our studio developed the restaurant’s identity across multiple layers, including:
• Naming and brand development
• Interior design and spatial concept
• Custom furniture and materials
• Website development
• Social presence and digital voice
• The overall guest experience
Designing these elements together allows everything to feel cohesive. From the moment someone first discovers the restaurant online to the moment they walk into the dining room, the experience feels intentional and connected.
Bringing City Energy to the Suburbs
Glen Ellyn has a strong and growing dining scene, and we were excited to create something that brings a city-level restaurant atmosphere to the community.
MK: Steak + Bar was designed to capture a little bit of that Chicago dining energy while still feeling right at home in the neighborhood. Elevated, but relaxed. Stylish, but welcoming.
It is the kind of space that works just as well for a celebratory dinner as it does for an impromptu drink at the bar.
