Before & After: Modern Cottage Kitchen
Our latest kitchen project was a remodel of a space with great bones and functionality but needed updating to fit the new owner’s style. The vibe for this remodel was a modern, cozy cottage. We kicked off the project with this moodboard introducing a calming and neutral color pallet coupled with natural woods and warm brass tones.
Before
The existing kitchen had a really nice footprint with a large island and ample storage space.
Demo
The majority of the kitchen’s layout stayed the same with the exception of the placement of the range. To achieve our modern, cottage vibe, we wanted to brighten up the space with as much natural light as possible. To do so, we relocated the range to the opposite wall allowing for a wall of windows indicated by the wall of plywood in the image below. We also moved the coat closet at the front entry which allowed us to opened up the kitchen entryway by about 4 feet.
The original cabinets were in really nice condition so we were able to donate the entire set including the range to Habitat Restore. The original refrigerator was moved to the pantry.
After
Ta-da!! To anchor this kitchen with charming details, we custom designed the cabinets with v-groove cabinet fronts and brass pulls. The perimeter cabinets were painted white with the island stained black to offset the light. We intentionally did not use upper cabinets to further allow for an airy and open feeling in the space. We selected a vintage-inspired range, brass accents, earthy textiles and natural plant life to warm the space while still feeling fresh and clean. The wall of windows brings in so much natural light to put this finishing touch on the modern, cottage aesthetic we were after. We couldn’t be happier with the end results.
